Dating Pet Owners & Animal Lovers – Find Singles Interested In Animals
We have cat-astrophic news for animal lovers: Men who like cats are less likely to get a date. Scientists showed hundreds of women photos of two men, both men pictured with and without a furry companion. By comparison, positive ratings for the second subject did not decline significantly when he was pictured with a cat — but women were more likely to rule him out as a potential partner.
It turns out that women are less likely to swipe right on men who have cats. Scientists Lori Kogan and Shelly Volsche surveyed straight women aged 18 to 24 who were shown photos of two men, both pictured with and without a cat. After the pictures were shown, they rated the men on attributes including personality, masculinity, dateability, and whether they would consider having a short or long term relationship with them.
The study found that women preferred the pictures of the men without their furry pal. After seeing one of the photos without a cat, 38 percent of women said they were likely or very likely to casually date the man in the picture, while 37 percent said they would consider dating him seriously. Only 9 percent said they would never date him. However, another photo of the same man, this time with a cat, received lower dateability scores, with only 33 percent saying they would date him casually, and the same number saying they would date him seriously.
Those who said they would never date the guy with a cat was at 14 percent. Our participants echo this cultural belief. Researchers advise people to avoid kissing, especially when hooking up with someone they’re not in quarantine with. He needed toilet paper, she had too many.

A recent study from Colorado State University suggested that women are less likely to swipe right on prospective male partners if the dating app profiles of those prospective male partners feature a photo of them posing with a pet cat. In the study, women between the ages of 18 and 24 were shown photos of two different male subjects both with and without a cat. In both cases, the women tended to review the catless photos more favorably.
Once the cat showed up, that number rose to 45 percent. According to Lori Kogan and Shelly Volsche, writing in Animals , men holding cats in photographs are seen as less masculine, more neurotic and ultimately less dateable. To look at the impact of cats on online dating success, the pair asked participants to complete a survey in which they saw two images of a man. In both pictures, the man was sitting in a chair against a white background, wearing a blue button-down shirt and jeans.
In one picture, he was alone; in the other, he was shown with a ginger cat on his lap. The order in which participants saw these images were randomised. There were two different versions of this survey, each depicting a different man. After viewing each picture, participants rated the men on several attributes including perceived personality how extraverted, agreeable, neurotic, conscientious and open participants believed they were , perceived masculinity and femininity, and how dateable they were.
Participants were also asked directly whether or not they would consider dating the man in either the short or long term, and whether or not they considered themselves to be a cat or dog person. The presence of a cat did, in fact, have an impact on how the men were perceived. When Man 1 was pictured by himself, he was seen as more extraverted; when he was with the cat, he was seen to be more agreeable, more neurotic and more open, and less traditionally masculine.
Overall, women were also less likely to want to date the man when he was holding a cat than when alone, and tended to see him as less desirable for a long-term relationship. There are, fairly obviously, limitations to the study. These are big conclusions to form from small effects based on four images of two young white men, which Kogan and Volsche note themselves: the presence of cats, they write, may only be relevant to people looking to date a white male. Perceptions of masculinity are also dependent on factors like race and class, which further research may seek to explore.
